BURNT

Known in the south west of England as swaling; the controlled burning of heathland and the clearing of dead vegetation is a highly controversial activity. Carried out by land managers and farmers, and supported by national park authorities, it is condemned by some conservationists, who say it inflicts mass destruction on wildlife habitats.

Burnt is a series made on Exmoor which shows the aftermath; a charred darkened land with distinctive marks and the skeletal remains of vegetation, and where scattered blades of grass create patterns on its textural surface. All are integral to these works.
