Mark Benham is an artist with a design background based in the UK. He uses photography as his medium for image making.
He first picked up a camera in the early 60s, or rather, he was handed it by his father to stand for a portrait. In the 70s he used a camera given to him by an aunt to document his time spent working on a farm in Wales, and in the 90s he travelled the World with a compact camera. In 2013, around the time he moved over to photography, he began his journeys through Portugal to take photographs for his book ‘Two Hundred Days’ – an intimate portrayal of a country he loves. Over the following years he focused on documentary, travel and street photography. In 2016 he won the World Food Photography Awards, which led to commissioned work.
Over the past couple of years he has moved in a different direction, more aligned with fine art photography. His broad-based work is currently derived from architecture, portraiture, still life and scapes, some of which is represented on this website. In 2023 he won the Architecture category in the Sony World Photography Awards, open competition.
